About
I am an Advanced Assistant Professor of Science Fiction in the English Department at my alma mater, Florida Atlantic University. Before joining the faculty at FAU, I was an Associate Professor of Humanities and Composition at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University where I also served as Coordinator of the Humanities Program and the Latinx American Studies minor. Though I was born in Richmond, Virginia, I spent my formative years in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and South Florida. After dropping out of South Florida public schools I became one of the first students to participate in Florida’s Online GED Preparation Course. Immediately after completing my GED, I attended FAU where I earned a BA in English with a graduate certificate in Women’s Studies followed by an MA in English with a concentration in Science Fiction and Fantasy. I completed my PhD in English with a certificate in Gender, Women’s, and Sexuality Studies at the University of Iowa where I was also an Instructor in the General Education Literature Program.
My research focuses on the politics of representation in speculative fiction, particularly feminist sf and Latinx Futurisms. I am co-editor of The Routledge Handbook to CoFuturisms with Grace L. Dillon, Isiah Lavender III, and Bodhisattva Chattopadhyay. I am also an associate editor for the Journal of the Fantastic in the Arts, editor of the Routledge book series Studies in Global Genre Fiction, and a juror for the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award for the best short science fiction of the year.
